Synopsis from Goodreads:

Magic. Sailing. A murderer among heroes.

Gravedigger Volke Savan wants nothing more than to be like his hero, the legendary magical swashbuckler, Gregory Ruma. First he needs to become an arcanist, someone capable of wielding magic, which requires bonding with a mythical creature. And he’ll take anything—a pegasus, a griffin, a ravenous hydra—maybe even a leviathan, like Ruma.

So when Volke stumbles across a knightmare, a creature made of shadow and terror, he has no reservations. But the knightmare knows a terrible secret: Ruma is a murderer out to spread corrupted magic throughout their island nation. He’s already killed a population of phoenixes and he intends to kill even more.

In order to protect his home, his adopted sister, and the girl he admires from afar, Volke will need to confront his hero, the Master Arcanist Gregory Ruma.

A fast-paced fantasy with magical creatures for those who enjoy the Furies of Calderon (Codex Alera series) by Jim Butcher, Unsouled (Cradle Series) by Will Wight, and Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan.

Knightmare Arcanist completely blew me away from start to finish. Magic, mythical creatures and adventure? SOLD! I tore through this one, unable to tear my eyes away from the pages for even a second.

The story is told from the POV of Volke, an apprentice gravedigger, alongside adopted sister Illia. we also have Zaxis and Atty are two participants selected to bond with Phoenixes. Arcanist fledglings from The Isle of Ruma are sent to the mainland to become apprentices of one of the Arcanist Guilds. I don’t want to give too much away, I really enjoyed how they interact with each other, the bond between Volke and Illia. I think the author has done an excellent job of writing characters readers are invested in and care about.

The concept of Arcanists intrigued me, leaving me eager to find out more about them. I can confirm I was not disappointed, their Eldrin (the mythical creatures they bond with) range from Phoenixes to Rizzels to Knightmares. My personal favourite is Nicholin, a Rizzel who bonded with Illia. I love him! The magic system is one of my favourite parts of the book. The type of magic you wield depends on the creature you bond with, It’s brilliant!

Knightmare Archanist is brilliantly written, gripping and I honestly can’t recommend it enough, I’m definitely going to continue reading the series.
