Synopsis from Goodreads:
Bonnie. Never Mum or Mummy or Mother. Just Bonnie.’
When it comes to flying under the radar, Ro Snow is an expert.
No friends.
No boys.
No parties.
And strictly NO VISITORS.
It may be lonely, but at least this way the truth remains where it should – hidden.
Then Tanvi Shah, the girl who almost died, comes tumbling back into her life, and Ro finds herself losing control of her carefully constructed lies.
But if Ro’s walls come crumbling down, who’s going to take care of Bonnie…
The story follows Ro, struggling to cope with her mum’s out of control hoarding and hide it from everyone at school. Her dad is busy playing happy families with his new wife and step daughter, her Mum is oblivious to how everything is impacting on Ro and Ro now has to contend with a very persistent Tanvi Shah who has just returned to school.
I’m yet to read a Lisa Williamson book I haven’t loved, I absolutely adored this one! Every. Single. Page. Paper Avalanche is incredible and brilliant in so many ways, the writing is so good I felt like I was slowly being suffocated by paper and junk, the anger and anxiety Ro feels was so palpable. My favourite part by far is The plot and character development, the Ro at the end is so vastly different to the one at the beginning it’s hard to believe they’re the same person. The mother/daughter relationship was incredibly interesting, the oblivious and selfish side of Bonnie isn’t something you see often and it’s refreshing, as is the impact her excessive hoarding had on those around her. I could go on for hours but I don’t want to spoil it.
You’re forced into feeling everything, and that is the sign of a truly incredible book. I highly recommend reading it, even if you’re not hugely into contemporary fiction. You will be by the end, trust me.
