Review: A Shiver of Snow and Sky by Lisa Lueddecke

InstagramCapture_0b009a51-faf9-443a-882d-115bb4b10387Synopsis from Goodreads:

Red, red, the lights glow red
Beware the danger up ahead…

On the frozen island of Skane, the sky speaks. Beautiful lights appear on clear nights, and their colours have meaning: Green means all is well, and the Goddess is happy. Blue means a snow storm is on the way.

And then there’s red. Red is rare. A warning.

Seventeen years ago, the sky turned red just as Ósa was born, unleashing a plague that claimed the lives of hundreds of villagers, including her own mother. This time, when the night sky once again bleeds crimson, she must discover how to stop the onslaught before so many lives are lost again.

My rating:

★★★★★

A Shiver of Snow and Sky is the beautiful debut from Lisa Lueddecke. It was one of my anticipated 2017 reads and it did not disappoint. Set on the Island of Skane we follow Ósa as she travels across the realm to the Mountains seeking the Goddess’s help to prevent the inevitable plague that follows the red lights and defeat the ∅r, a brutal, war-loving race that destroyed their homeland.

I struggle to write reviews for books I really love. Its hard to put into words how much you enjoyed a book without overhyping it and consequently doing more harm than good. This book deserves so much love and praise and I really hope you all enjoy it as much as I did. There is so much to love about this world, from the characters to the vividly stunning landscapes and skies. Not forgetting the Ice Dragon! I’m convinced you can smell the magic held within its pages. The cover is gorgeous; it has got to be one of the most beautiful cover I’ve ever seen and the finished cover is even more beautiful!

The plot and character development are incredibly well written, you feel like you’re in Skane with Ósa. I love the bond between Ósa and Ivar, her relationship with her father and how it evolves and changes throughout the book. It was a privilege to watch Ósa grow as a person. I can’t recommend this book enough, A Shiver of Snow and Sky is as gripping as it is beautiful and I can’t wait to get my hands on a finished copy. I’m looking forward to reading many more books by Lisa!
