Review: There’s Someone Inside Your House

untitledSynopsis from Goodreads:

Scream meets YA in this hotly-anticipated new novel from the bestselling author of Anna and the French Kiss.

One-by-one, the students of Osborne High are dying in a series of gruesome murders, each with increasing and grotesque flair. As the terror grows closer and the hunt intensifies for the killer, the dark secrets among them must finally be confronted.

International bestselling author Stephanie Perkins returns with a fresh take on the classic teen slasher story that’s fun, quick-witted, and completely impossible to put down.

I received and E-ARC from Macmillan Children’s Books via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

My rating:

★★★★

This is going to be a short review as I don’t want to spoil it for anyone. I’ve never read any of Stephanie Perkins’ published works before. I know, I know, I promise I will! As soon as I heard about this one, I knew I had to read it ASAP! I can’t say much as I don’t want to spoil it for anyone. It’s a gripping fresh take on your slasher story. That’s not to say it’s trope free, though the twists more than make up for it and Stephanie gets creative which I love as a huge horror and thriller fan.

The story follows Makani, sent to live with her grandmother in Osborn, USA to take care of her after an unknown incident back home in Hawaii. Makani is haunted by what happened before she came and fears people will find out. One-by-one teenagers are brutally murdered in a variety of gruesome ways unique to each victim. Fear and panic mounts as the killer continues to elude capture, even after their failed attempt at murdering Makani after assuming she was home alone. Secrets are revealed and confronted, shedding light on the killer and their motives (I’m giving nothing away…).

The plot and character development is well written, you find yourself questioning everyone and their motives. I liked the pacing, there are times when it is a little slow but for me this just added suspense to the atmosphere. I do feel it could have benefitted from an epilogue, for me the ending was quite abrupt. Overall I really enjoyed this book, it’s well worth a read and will leave you questioning every misplaced item in your house and triple checking all the locks! There’s Someone Inside Your House is definitely one to add to your Halloween TBRs!
